ExperienceRising Tide TheatreSince its founding as a professional theatre company in 1978, Rising Tide Theatre has offered audiences some of the finest plays and talent available in Canada. The Company has explored current and controversial issues on stage, rejuvenated and modernized classics, and created plays which seek to portray the culture and character of Newfoundland and Labrador . Rising Tide has mounted full-scale touring productions, which have performed throughout the province, across Canada and in the United Kingdom. Several productions have been televised, both provincially and nationally. The fruits of this labour have been some of the most well-received and critically acclaimed works to grace the Newfoundland stage in recent memory. These works represent the union of professional artists from across the country and while remaining uniquely Newfoundland in flavour , these collaborations have produced works of broad ranging themes. One such collaboration, The Harps of God, a play about the 1914 sealing disaster developed with Kent Stetson, received the 2001 Governor General's Literary Award for English Drama. In 1993 Rising Tide Theatre mounted The New Founde Lande in Trinity. A full-scale historical pageant by Donna Butt and Rick Boland celebrating the province's rich and diverse history through a series of dramatized vignettes, the production marries the talent and creativity of local residents with that of seasoned professionals. On July 10, 1993, The New Founde Lande was born. Since that day more than 100,000 people have followed Matey and Taverner around the roads of Trinity. In 1994 the Company opened the Summer In The Bight Theatre Festival as a companion event to the Pageant. Rising Tide designs each new season of plays, dinner theatre and concerts to provide an inspiring collection of the stories that make this province unique. Rising Tide is one of the mainstays of professional theatre in Newfoundland and Labrador . The Company is proud of its many achievements and proud of the many talented artists who have worked with the Company since its inception in 1978. As it progresses with courage and confidence, Rising Tide Theatre will continue to be a major force in the cultural and theatrical life of our province. |
