The Discovery Trail

Running along Newfoundland's Bonavista Peninsula—just two and a half hours from St. John's—the Discovery Trail is a panorama of natural wonders, stunning scenery, rich heritage sites, and quaint coastal villages.

Once you complete your three night stay in Heart's Delight, you move on to the Discovery Trail and the vibrant fishing village of  Bonavista/Elliston. The name 'Bonavista' translates into 'Happy View,' and legend has it that explorer John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) uttered these very words when he arrived more than 500 years ago. As you explore the trail, you'll immediately understand what he meant. Witness hordes of Atlantic Puffins, our provincial bird.  Visit a trio of historic lighthouses at Cape Bonavista, King's Cove, and Green Island. Discover unique geologic phenomena found nowhere else on the planet. Wander through a number of gorgeous coastal trails.

The "Traveller's Diary" will direct you to the people who know how to find the best theatre, the best hiking, and the best places to eat--always a challenge in the remote areas of Newfoundland.  And of course--the best way to see abandoned communities and to hear about the beginning of North America.
