A Car, Three Coastal Homes, and a Custom Guidebook

CapeRace will give you a key that fits the locks of three newly restored coastal homes, a car, and a custom commercial-grade guidebook written specifically by us for your trip.

What makes a CapeRace trip different?

CapeRace offers a different approach to conventional travel.  We want you to experience the true Newfoundland Adventure -- experiencing not only the pristine wilderness and spectacular wildlife, but also the people. We have designed an authentic meaningful adventure that will expose you to all facets of this exotic island in a unique and exciting way.  First, the coastal homes you will stay at are owned and managed by CapeRace. Second, our custom self-published guidebook, The Traveler's Diary, is written specifically for your trip.  This combination creates high quality control of both your accommodations and your time, without loss of autonomy or privacy.  You will stay at the CapeRace properties on an exclusive-use basis, and use the custom guidebook to discover and explore unique and out of the way places.  You make all the decisions.

The Traveler's Diary: Cultural and Ecological Discovery at Your Own Pace, on Your Own Terms

It is our belief that responsible travel ultimately produces the best experience-- that the memorable heart-felt cultural interaction occurs without the intervention of a tour operator, a noisy bus, or parades of tourists wearing matching backpacks all holding onto a rope.

Today's technology allows our custom self-published guidebook to be kept current. It self-directs the traveler not only to the popular sights, but also to the unique and out of the way pubs, nature sites, shops and hikes that are not well known to the average traveler.  Most important, we attempt to connect you with the everyday people that make up the exotic island culture.  And as CapeRace and our customers meet more interesting people, and visit more unique places, we evolve the guidebook to ensure the next experience maintains originality, spontaneity, and authenticity--- ensuring that the traveler's footprint is minimized.  Newfoundland is a largely undiscovered and unexplored place, allowing the Traveler's Diary to change often throughout the season as new people, new music, and new experiences are uncovered.  How The Traveller's Diary Works >>

Through this approach we can deliver to you an authentic, sustainable travel experience, one that distributes economic benefits wider with less concentrated intrusions. It is important to note that we do not stage the cultural interactions you will have, rather we place you in the situation to have them.  At each destination the opportunity to become part of the local community awaits you. Everything is by chance, and the outcome is what you make of it.   The flexible self-driving, self-catering approach gives you the opportunity to experience cultural and ecological discovery at your own pace, on your own terms.  See the Recent Magazine Stories >>

Three Coastal Homes: You Become Part of the Community

Your tour will take you throughout the east coast of Newfoundland, the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsula's. You will spend three nights (or longer if you pre-arrange) at each destination--St. John's, Heart's Delight, and Bonavista.  You will stay in your own private, fully-outfitted, self-catered coastal home on an exclusive-use basis.  Each of the homes have a contrasting decor that is representative of the differing locations and lifestyles.  Hipditch House in St. John's, while over 100 years old, has been restored to represent the new emerging culture in the city. It is located in the Battery Neighbourhood at the base of Signal Hill, just a ten minute walk from downtown.  The EJ Sooley House in Heart's Delight has been restored back to it's original 1930's fisherman's cottage style. It is located on Trinity Bay in a small quiet former fishing village.  The Thomas Mouland House is located in the Mockbeggar neighbourhood (est 1700) of Bonavista. It is located in the largest, still operating fishing village on the island, which is home to 3000 persons.

Experts in the Art of Having Fun

What Newfoundland offers is choice. Whale-watching at Witless Bay can be experienced by large passenger tour-boat, sea kayak, high speed Zodiac, or, you may be able to hire a fishing boat by striking a deal with a local on the dock. Not only will he skipper the boat but he will also be an excellent guide.  In addition, you can augment your daily excursions by accessing nearby world-class hiking trails. With spectacular views of the ocean, these trails exist at most sites, and will be noted in the travel guide.  While in Bonavista you can check out the the site of John Cabot's landing in 1497, or head down to Trinity where you can overdose on world-class theatre, live folk music and historic architecture.  Or you can do both. In St. John's you can tour many sites by accessing the Grand Concourse Trail, an urban trail that winds it's way through St. John's, or you can drive or walk to the sites in minutes. Plan a full day visit to Cape Spear by taking a two, four, or six-hour hike, or, drive there in twenty minutes and gaze at the ocean for the afternoon.  Or hang out in Petty Harbour, a historic fishing village just down the road. Because so many options exist, planning can be done on the fly depending on your mood, your energy, and the weather.
