History of the Battery Neighbourhood

May 06th, 2010

The Battery Neighbourhood is one of the oldest in St. John's and is the location of Hipditch House and Hares Ears Cottage. It is one of the most photographed neighbourhoods in an already picturesque city.  It is described as an outport within the city since many of its older residents have historical ties to the fishery, and its small houses come complete with wharves and twine lofts. It also has a troubled history going back years that includes avalanches, rockslides, flooding, storm damage and threats of relocation.  Here is an archival look at the Battery and some of the problems the close-knit community has faced in in the past - and is still facing.
