CapeRace CULINARY & Fisher's Loft Inn - Canada Staycation - 8 Days

Trip detail

"Ingredients evoke landscapes, recipes recall history and certain dishes can unlock the very essence of a place and its people".

Get under the skin of Newfoundland. Your stay begins where we say Dublin meets San Francisco; St, John's, the oldest city in North America. It concludes at the beautiful outport of Port Rexton.  Your trip will be a gastro-cultural adventure that your senses will never forget. It will be steeped in local characters, spectacular wildlife and wide-ranging memorable dining experiences, from the exquisite to the Anthony Bourdain style edgy. We have based the CapeRace Culinary Adventure on our award-winning original Eco-Culture Experience™ trip.

While traveling from St. John’s to Port Rexton via Bonavista, your written personal travel guidebook will lead you to many gastro-cultural experiences powered by colourful characters, local fun, indigenous music and cultural surprises that you'll only ever experience in Newfoundland. In St. John's you'll rub shoulders with renowned Newfoundland chefs such as Todd Perrin, (Canada’s Top Chef contestant) of Mallard Restaurant and Jeremy Charles of award-winning Raymond's Fine Dining. Find out why the top chefs use wild rabbit and moose and foraged berries or be the judge of the best fish & chips in town, a battle raging between two St. John's restaurants that have sat side by side since 1951. Drop in on a 75-year old family business that still serves up take-out baked turkey legs over an ancient counter.

Visit the QV Brewery at Quidi Vidi Village and attend a tasting session of their best-selling beers, including Iceberg Beer, made from 30,000 year old glacial ice. Get front of the line privileges to their weekly ocean-side kitchen party held every Friday afternoon.

While in St. John's you'll use Hares Ears Cottage, located in the iconic Battery Neighbourhood with panoramic views of the city and harbour, as a base to explore one of the most interesting and distinct cities in North America.

Backstage Kitchen Pass

While in the coastal outport communities your custom guidebook will lead you to simple-kitchen gems set in idyllic wilderness settings.Take in a day of coastal hiking on the Skerwink Trail. Witness dramatic sea stacks, arches, sea caves and a variety of fauna and flora. Choose from over nine dramatic trails to hike in the area. Visit the local art galleries, take a boat to get close to the breaching whales or sample local beer at a famous Newfoundland pub. Enjoy a coastal outdoor lunch overlooking towering icebergs that often visit the harbour and witness gigantic seabirds diving-bombing from the sky into the deep blue North Atlantic. Extend your day by taking in a variety of local theater found nearby.

While in Bonavista you'll stay two nights at Seafair Cottage, Bonavista, our newest property, and two nights at the spectacular Fisher's Loft at Port Rexton. Bonavista inhabitants were among the early European arrivals to Newfoundland. In 1699, its 446 inhabitants made it the most populated harbor on the island. Approximately 500 houses were built at Bonavista between 1857 and 1911 and these form the bulk of the traditional housing stock at Bonavista today. Seafair was one of the 500 houses, will be your home for your stay in this historic community.

The perfect ending to this culinary cultural trip will be your two night stay at Fisher's Loft Inn. The Inn is a collection of indigenous Trinity Bay Houses (third generation saltbox design and a Mansard) accompanied by a French kitchen garden and operating greenhouse. It is "Where to Eat in Canada's"  top ranked restaurant in rural Newfoundland, with the restaurant looking over the kitchen garden, out across Trinity Bay to the North Atlantic. While dining you will experience sun rises and sun sets, icebergs and whales in season. The Inn's culinary approach emphasizes fresh, local ingredients. Attractive yet not pretentious plating makes for a relaxed meal in a matched setting that includes furniture made by local artisan Mike Paterson. The Trinity Bight consists of 12 communities. Fishers’ Loft is situated in the middle of the Bight. Within a 20-minute drive are many attractions, historic sites, theater, internationally recognized hikes and ocean tours. The newest attraction, the Port Rexton Brewery, has been a hit in the community offering local brews and an interesting social scene.
