Seafair House, Mockbeggar, Bonavista

Seafair House... our latest restoration. The house was built in 1913 in Mockbeggar, the oldest district of Bonavista. The house is a two-and-a-half-storeyed, steep, gabled-roof structure. An excellent example of nineteenth-century architecture in the Bonavista area. We restored it with a contemporary, rustic, authentic theme...

The Adam Mouland House was built in 1913 in Mockbeggar, the oldest district of Bonavista. The house is a two-and-a-half-storeyed, steep, gabled-roof structure. It is a fine example of nineteenth and early twentieth-century architecture in the Bonavista area.  The simple, yet decorative window and door trim reflect the builder’s expressive style and craftsmanship and local carpenters recreated the exact specification when restoring the windows. Historically, this property is important because it is representative of an era when the people of Bonavista relied heavily on the inshore fishery for survival. At the time when this house was constructed it was common for residents to have a number of fishery-related outbuildings on their property.

"Sunny yellow, cherry red, turquoise blue—St. Johns’ pop-art-colored houses, collectively known as Jellybean Row, look especially awe-inspiring clustered in the cliffs of this atmosphere-drenched coastal neighborhood just outside downtown..."  Condé Nast Traveller, February 2016, profiling the Battery Village, St. John's.

The Outer Battery is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city and still maintains the look and feel of a small fishing village. With an independent ground floor studio, the coastal home is configured for the multi-generational traveller and great for those who want the option of independence from their travelling companions.

"... We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Hare’s Ears Cottage! It is a beautifully appointed cottage with such a charming ambience. It has so much natural light and stunning views with the long wall of windows. The beds were super comfortable and the bathrooms were beautiful and clean. We loved this cottage and it’s very unique setting. Watching huge ships up close through the lovely length of windows travel into and out of the harbour through the narrows was amazing. Hiking the Signal Hill Trail which starts steps away from the cottage was great, with its stunning panoramic views of the area.  We will forever cherish memories of our stay at Hare’s Ears Cottage and would be thrilled to be able to visit again..."

Fogo Island Inn - Fogo Island

This is a lodge with a soul, filled with the handiwork of the local people: traditional outport furniture, handcrafted quilts, and woven rugs...

The Fogo Island Inn is the culmination of a major community revitalization project. The building’s rugged minimalist architecture balances traditional influences with a contemporary sensibility, which architect Todd Saunders has made and built just for Fogo. A cultural destination in its own right where visitors and locals meet, the Inn includes an art gallery, heritage library, cinema and rooftop sauna. Each of the 29 guest rooms is unique, with every detail chosen with purpose and handcrafted by locals.

CapeRace Newfoundland Adventures is the only boutique tour operator that intgerates a stay at the Fogo Island Inn with unique congruent travel experiences around the island. From packaged culinary adventures to custom eco-focussed experiences we can deliver the perfect trip to meet you and your family's travel style. Arrive first in the vibrant city of St. John's, then travel overland by car to the Fogo Island Inn. Or, after your stay at Fogo Island Inn venture on to Gros Morne National Park. Or ask us we think about your ideas.

You can see our Fogo Island Inn travel experiences here:  Fogo Island Travel Packages>>  Important to note-- we can customize any of our trips you see displayed. We have a reseller contract with the Inn that allows us to offer complimentary room upgrades and early check-in and check out.

The Inn is a great feat of contemporary architecture, all stilts, angles, and vertical lines that contrast with the rough slabs of ancient granite that surround it. But as much as it might stand out in its setting, the Inn is integrally part of Fogo Island. This is a lodge with a soul, filled with the handiwork of the local people: traditional outport furniture, handcrafted quilts, and woven rugs—once-disappearing arts now given new life and purpose.

Zita Cobb, the owner and founder of the Fogo Island Inn, grew up on the island and went on to make her fortune in high-tech communications, has recently been helping locals create a geotourism industry through her foundation, Shorefast. Fogo Island now has an internationally acclaimed artist residency program, a brand new inn and several thriving micro-businesses. Local entrepreneurs are doing everything from cultivating organic crops on the edge of the Atlantic to selling patchwork quilts to taking visitors out cod jigging.
