Welcome to the Rock!

There will be a welcome basket for you at Hipditch House when you arrive.  Don’t forget to take your goodies with you on to your next destination, but please leave the basket behind and use the available cooler bags to transport any grocery items. The Traveller’s Diary outlines various grocery stores in St. John’s. You can leave the cooler bags at Seafair.

The Traveller’s Diary outlines various grocery stores in St. John’s. There is a small local grocery store just before you get to Heart’s Delight, but you won’t find a lot of choice when shopping there. You might want to stock up in St. John’s just before you head to Heart’s Delight which is about an hour and fifteen minute drive from St. John’s. The grocery store in Bonavista is more mainstream.

The Battery Cafeis one of our favourite neighbourhood spots, and especially so in in the mornings. The Crow’s Nest is a little tricky to find—it’s right next to the National War Memorial. After supper, drive up to Signal Hill to see it in evening light.

It’s a 32km drive to sea kayaking; it should take you about 30min to get there from the Battery. Need to know: We recommend wearing quick dry material and avoid wearing cotton or jeans. A sun hat, sun screen and sunglasses are recommended as the sun reflects off the water. It is best to wear water shoes or crocs, however comfortable sandals or sneakers that you don’t mind getting wet will work. We advise that you bring a change of clothes for after the tour as there is sea spray from the water. If you would like to bring along your camera, we strongly advise you use a waterproof bag/case to protect from splashes and a camera float or use a waterproof camera. The Outfitters cannot be held responsible for cameras that go overboard. Once you have arrived at the tour facility in Bay Bulls, your guide will ask you to complete a waiver for all the members of your group. No tours will proceed unless a waiver is completed by all persons on the tour. You can can complete the waiver ahead of time by downloading it here.

It’s a 76km drive to Lighthouse Picnics in Ferryland; it should take you about 1hr15 from Bay Bulls. Need to know: Please identify yourself as a CapeRace customer when you arrive and they will invoice us for your visit. A few days prior to picnic, I will send you a copy of the menu for that day.  You can email me your picnic choices and I will confirm your order with the Lighthouse Picnic. The picnic will be delivered to you at the start of the lighthouse road.  They have a Lighthouse Picnics branded van that will be there with your picnic at the specified time. Guests may take the picnic with them on their hike to the lighthouse, to the beach or any of the beautiful trails around Ferryland. From where you park your car, you’ll have about a 30min hike on a gravel single track road, so we recommend sneakers or comfortable footwear.
